Job Overview (Family Counsellor)

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DOJ&CD) is offering an exciting opportunity for passionate and qualified Family Counsellors/Social Workers. This role is vital in safeguarding the best interests of children and ensuring families receive fair and just support during disputes and legal matters.

Successful candidates will provide professional mediation, counselling, and court support services under the Family Advocate’s Office. The position involves traveling extensively, conducting inquiries in both urban and rural communities, and playing a central role in Family Law matters, including divorce mediation, child custody, and parental disputes.

Key Requirements for Family Counsellor

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or equivalent qualification.
  • Registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP).
  • Post-registration experience in Social Work, ideally in family counselling, child welfare, or mediation.
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Mediation in Certain Divorce Matters Act
    • Children’s Act
    • Maintenance Act
    • Domestic Violence Act
    • Hague Convention on International Child Abduction
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel extensively.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Conflict resolution, mediation, and interviewing skills.
  • Ability to compile detailed forensic reports.
  • Strong attention to detail and sensitivity in handling complex family issues.
  • Computer literacy (MS Word).
  • Strong teamwork, empathy, and resilience under pressure.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • As a Family Counsellor/Social Worker, you will:
  • Conduct inquiries and mediation sessions to determine the best interests of children.
  • Evaluate evidence and compile professional forensic reports for submission in court.
  • Act as an expert witness on behalf of the Family Advocate in family law cases.
  • Manage case flow administration to ensure timely resolution of matters.
  • Conduct interviews with children, parents, and other stakeholders to gather information.
  • Travel to various communities, including rural areas, to carry out investigations.
  • Provide professional counselling and support to families in conflict.
  • Assist in implementing family law policies that promote child welfare and social justice.
