About the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DOJ&CD)

The DOJ&CD is responsible for ensuring access to justice, promoting the rule of law, and safeguarding constitutional rights in South Africa. Through the Office of the State Attorney, the department provides legal services to government departments, protecting the State’s legal interests while ensuring justice is served fairly and efficiently.

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development is seeking a skilled and compassionate Court Intermediary to join the team at the Magistrate’s Office in Lebowakgomo. This role offers a unique opportunity to provide crucial support to vulnerable witnesses, ensuring fair and dignified participation in court proceedings.

Salary & Contract

  • Salary Range: R397 116 – R467 790 per annum
  • Contract Type: Permanent (subject to performance agreement)
  • Position: Court Intermediary

Minimum Requirements for Court Intermediary position

To be considered for this position, applicants must have:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or National Diploma in Teaching, Social Work/Family Counselling, Child Care and Youth Development, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Clinical Counselling, or Educational Psychology.
  • Registration with the relevant professional/scientific body in your field.
  • At least 3 years’ work experience in the relevant field.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Court procedures, etiquette, and legal terminology.
    • Relevant legal frameworks including:
      • Constitution of RSA, 1996
      • Criminal Procedure Act, 1977 (Sections 153, 158, 170A)
      • Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act, 2007
      • Children’s Act, 2005
      • Domestic Violence Act, 1998
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Proficiency in English, Sepedi, Setswana, and IsiNdebele (foreign language knowledge is an advantage).

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong communication and empathetic listening skills (especially with children and individuals with mental disabilities).
  • Trauma counselling and supportive care skills.
  • Interpersonal and problem-solving abilities.
  • Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to work with sensitivity, discretion, and confidentiality.

Key Responsibilities

As a Court Intermediary, you will:

  • Facilitate testimony for children, persons with mental disabilities, and other traumatized witnesses in a safe, non-intimidating environment.
  • Provide specialized child language and disability support services.
  • Maintain and operate equipment in the private testifying room.
  • Offer support services to witnesses, making referrals when necessary.
  • Assist children in court using anatomically-detailed dolls where appropriate.
  • Ensure accurate administrative documentation and reporting.
