Minimum Requirements
To qualify, you must have:
- A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree or any recognized 4-year legal qualification
- At least 2 years’ post-qualification legal or litigation experience
- Admission as an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa
- A valid driver’s license
- Willingness to travel and represent the State in various jurisdictions
Duties and Key Responsibilities
As an Assistant State Attorney, you will:
- Represent the State in civil litigation matters in all forums including:
- High Court
- Magistrates’ Courts
- Labour Courts
- CCMA
- Land Claims Court
- Draft and review legal contracts and agreements for government departments
- Offer professional legal opinions and guidance to government clients
- Attend settlement negotiations, mediations, and arbitrations
- Handle debt recovery and enforcement of court orders
- Engage with State departments, advising on compliance with legislative frameworks
- Maintain strict confidentiality and integrity in sensitive State matters
- Support junior legal professionals through mentorship and peer guidance
- Promote the DOJ’s mission to uphold justice, accountability, and constitutional values
