Requirements for Senior Court Interpreter

  • Grade 12 certificate with 10 years’ practical experience in court interpreting or a 3-year National Diploma (NQF 6) in Legal Interpreting or equivalent qualification.
  • Minimum 3 years’ practical experience in court interpreting.
  • Proficiency in English and at least two indigenous languages, primarily IsiXhosa and Afrikaans.
  • Ability to undergo oral and written language proficiency testing.
  • A valid driver’s license is advantageous.

Assessment: All shortlisted candidates will undertake a pre-entry practical exercise to evaluate technical and generic competencies relevant to the post.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide interpreting services in criminal, civil, labor, and quasi-judicial court proceedings.
  • Render interpreting services during pre-trial consultations, mediation, and hearings.
  • Translate legal documents, exhibits, and other official correspondence.
  • Assist with reconstruction and verification of court records.
  • Develop and standardize legal terminology, creating new terms as required.
  • Support administrative functions for the Judiciary, Court Manager, and Supervisors as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of interpretations and related documentation.
  • Participate in training programs and continuous professional development opportunities provided by the OCJ.
