About the Role (Family Law Assistant)
The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to join its Family Advocate offices in Polokwane and Thohoyandou. This position offers an excellent opportunity for legal professionals to contribute to protecting the rights and wellbeing of children and families in South Africa.
Key Responsibilities
- A three (3) year qualification in a Legal field or equivalent legal qualification.
- Knowledge of:
- Office of the Family Advocate functions
- Family Law
- Mediation in Certain Divorce Matters Act
- Children’s Act
- Maintenance Act
- Domestic Violence Act
- Hague Convention on International Child Abduction
- Skills:
- Strong verbal and written communication
- Mediation and conflict resolution skills
- Computer literacy (MS Office)
- Legal research abilities
- Excellent interpersonal relations and attention to detail
Minimum Requirements for Family Law Assistant
- A three-year qualification in Law or an equivalent legal qualification.
- Knowledge of:
- Functions of the Office of the Family Advocate
- Family Law, including:
- Mediation in Certain Divorce Matters Act
- Children’s Act
- Maintenance Act
- Domestic Violence Act
- Hague Convention on International Child Abduction
- Skills:
- Strong communication (written & verbal)
- Mediation skills
- Legal research capability
- Attention to detail
- Computer literacy (MS Office)
- Good interpersonal relations
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct screening interviews and facilitate parental rights and responsibilities information sessions.
- Assist the public with form completion and respond to general queries.
- Support customer satisfaction surveys and community outreach projects.
- Assist the Family Advocate with matters on the court roll.
- Receive, assess, and respond to correspondence on behalf of the Family Advocate.
- Conduct mediations in parental rights and responsibilities disputes.
- Maintain accurate records and prepare reports for case tracking.
