Judge Secretary Job Overview
The Office of the Chief Justice is seeking three experienced and detail-oriented Judge Secretary to join the Western Cape Division of the High Court. These positions require individuals with a passion for legal administration, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to support Judges both in chambers and in court.
This is an excellent opportunity for professionals with legal, secretarial, or administrative experience to contribute to the efficient operation of South Africa’s judicial system.
Minimum Requirements for Judge Secretary
- Education: Grade 12 (Matric).
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years secretarial experience.
- Advantageous:
- Experience in a legal or court environment.
- LLB Degree, Bachelor of Law Degree, or completion of at least 20 modules towards one of these qualifications.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Skills & Competencies:
- Excellent verbal and written communication (English).
- Strong administration and organisational skills.
- High attention to detail and confidentiality.
- Ability to meet strict deadlines under pressure.
- Excellent typing skills (Dictaphone typing experience is a plus).
- Proficient in MS Office Suite.
- Customer service orientation.
Note: Shortlisted candidates must pass a typing test.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide full legal secretarial and administrative support to the Judge.
- Draft and type legal documents including memorandums, directions, opinions, letters, and court orders.
- Manage the Judge’s correspondence, appointments, and travel arrangements for both regular and circuit court sittings.
- Maintain and update case files, including court orders, postponements, witness lists, and exhibits.
- Record court proceedings (digital recordings) for urgent cases and ensure the security of such recordings.
- Accompany the Judge to court and keep accurate daily time records, including adjournments.
- Compile court statistics and ensure accurate data entry into statistical tools.
- Manage the Judge’s vehicle, logbook, and maintenance schedule.
- Prepare reports, expense statements, and other official documents as required.
- Maintain and update the Judge’s library, including loose-leaf legal publications.
- Arrange refreshments and attend to visitors’ needs during official meetings.
- Execute requests from the judiciary related to case management and court proceedings.

- Proficient in Microsoft Office and digital record-keeping systems
- Strong administration and organizational abilities
- Confidentiality and discretion in handling sensitive information

- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
- Fast and accurate typing skills, including Dictaphone typing
Salary & Benefits
- Salary: R325,101 – R382,959 per annum (Level 07).
- Benefits: 37% of salary in lieu of benefits.
- Contract: 12 months (non-renewable).
