About the role (Senior Court Interpreter)

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DOJ&CD) is seeking applications for the position of Senior Court Interpreter at the Magistrate Court in Giyani, Limpopo.

This is a critical role within South Africa’s justice system, ensuring that all individuals, regardless of language, have fair access to justice. If you are passionate about languages, law, and public service, this position offers you an opportunity to make a lasting impact in your community.

Minimum Requirements

You must meet one of the following pathways:

  • Option 1: Grade 12/NQF Level 4 + National Diploma in Legal Interpreting (or related qualification in languages) + 3 years’ practical experience in court interpreting.
  • Option 2: Grade 12 with 10 years’ experience in court interpreting.

Additional Requirements

  • Proficiency in English and at least two indigenous languages (Venda, Tsonga, Shona).
  • Strong understanding of legal terminology and court procedures.
  • Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel).
  • Knowledge of the Justice System and Integrated Case Management System (ICMS).

  • Ability to supervise junior staff and provide mentorship.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

As a Senior Court Interpreter, your responsibilities will include:

  • Rendering interpreting services during court proceedings.
  • Translating legal documents and exhibits into required languages.
  • Recording case details in the criminal record book.
  • Preparing case records on request from Magistrates or Prosecutors.
  • Coordinating with Prosecutors to arrange for foreign language interpreters.
  • Performing specific administrative and support functions in the court.
  • Assisting with capturing information on the Integrated Case Management System (ICMS).
  • Supervising and guiding junior Court Interpreters.
